Cape Cod & Rhode Island…

Posted on

We knew we were heading to Rhode Island for the day, but decided to throw Cape Cod into the mix since Rhode Island is such a tiny state. So we headed to the oldest Cape Cod town of “Sandwich”.So obviously that only left us with one lunch choice, we had to eat a sandwich in Sandwich of course with Cape Cod chips at The Chew. Then we drove over to the board walk to take in the view of The Cape after checking out a few stores. The boardwalk in itself was Really neat. Walking the long walk holding our umbrella sideways to block the inevitable wind and rain as we read all of the engraved boards. So many sweet messages. I wonder how many people got engaged by the “will you marry me” board? When we got by the water we started looking for our rock to bring home and I almost instantly stumbled upon this little white rock that had a heart on it. Perfect!Cape Cod was beautiful, chilly, wet, and windy…Very windy….And all of our joking and silly pictures aside, we had a blast ignoring the funky weather!

Now to explore Rhode Island!

Full of more beautiful sights…However The path we took to get to Newport only offered the sight of one lonesome light house….Yes, that is in someone’s yard. Close enough. We saw a real one in Maine, right? Ha ha. Where else have we seen a Rudolph the red nosed reindeer crossing? We explored many more unique shops. Found several souvineers for our family and friends.

And stumbled upon the fattest seagul we had ever seen.In planning for this part of the trip I knew there was a few local items we had to partake in. So while driving around we found this little jem on the side of a random road and I caught a brief glace at the menu on the wall, so we turned around. It seems Evelyn’s has been around for quite some time. And turns out it had been featured on the show Diners, Drive-ins, & Dives. We only happened upon it because I saw they had the famous state drink on their menu, coffee milk. And we decided to split a lobster roll for dinner. Turns out, this lobstah roll was loaded with twice as much lobster as the one we got in Maine. The coffee milk was interesting enough that we stopped at a local grocery store and bought a bottle to bring home for our girls to try. Maybe we won’t tell them it’s caffeine free?Other food and drink items on the list to try were the pizza strips. Which to us was almost the equivalent of a glorified bread stick with pizza sauce on it, but sold in every bakery in sight. Then there was the coffee cabinet or as we know them in the south a shake. It’s really a good thing we’ll be doing so much walking on this trip, because this is far more junk than is in our usual day to day diet, but vacation. We also got a sugar free vanilla iced latte from this little joint where we found the massive seagul.Pretty much the only thing on our list that we didn’t find was a “bubblah”, but we already know what a water fountain looks like so I think we will survive. We really enjoyed exploring this itty bitty state. Missing our lil monsters a ton, but the quality time with each other is priceless as well. And really, how stunning is this view?

4 states in one day…

Posted on

Coffee, breakfast, lunch, & dinner in four different states. 100% chance of rain & 20° colder than I had packed for us didn’t deter us one bit!

Massachusetts (coffee)

We started our morning off with coffee in Winchester at “The Fuller Cup”  of course, before starting our exploring of three new to us states.

New Hampshire (breakfast)

We had breakfast at Colby’s in the downtown historic district of Portsmouth. Shared a delish breakfast of corned beef hash, eggs, and blueberry pancakes. Then walked up and down the main strip exploring several shops and grabbing a coffee to go at Breaking Grounds before heading to our next destination. I think it reminded me of a more low key version of Austin with lots of artwork on various buildings. We really enjoyed this little town. So many old unique buildings. And I thought this bridge was really cool until I discovered I had to cross it to get into Maine.

Maine (lunch)

The rain started to pick up some as we entered Maine. We headed to the town of Portland. I had read about the bridge with “locks of love” like in Paris. But before you love birds pack up and road trip to Portland, Maine let me fill you in on a little tidbit. It’s no longer anything like the beautiful images you find on Pinterest or Google image searches, ha ha. Just like Paris the weight of the locks started to cause damage on the bridge. So the city commissioned a local artist to make a railing that was both artsy and would also deter folks from declaring their love for each other on this bridge with this neat blue wavy railing as seen below. They did however, keep a portion of the fence and place it very close by, so there is still hope for you after all. That little white building on the water is “Portland Lobster Co” and where we headed for lunch for our Maine lobstah roll. I think we were both a little surprised to discover it was cold lobster on that bread. But fresh seafood being delivered to them twice daily made it a very fresh sandwich. We did a little more roaming of streets with our trusty umbrella. Then we drove up the road to the town of Cape Elizabeth to take in the beauty of the Portland headlight.George Washington dedicated this light house to the coast guard. It was an incredible sight to see before hoping back in the car and driving two states over for dinner and more sight seeing.

Vermont (dinner)

What an absolutely scenic drive. We drove through mountains, lost phone signals, past a beach moment’s after seeing signs for a ski lift. It’s was rocky, hilly, tons of greenery. Just beautiful. I think our only regret was not having more day light hours there. Even the rain didn’t fade our excitement of all we were taking in together. There is no shortage of steeples in this part of the country. Really we’ve already seen countless. Something about this one reminds me of the St. Louis Cathedral in the French Quarter. We had dinner in Brattleboro, Vermont at a hip little place called Hazel. Some how we enjoyed every meal we’ve had today! I think the thing I was most excited about in Vermont was being able to take in the beauty of this 138 year old covered bridge, “The Creamery”, just off of Route 9.Some how it made both of us think of the movie Beatlejuice. We drove about five our more hours today, but it didn’t really feel like it. Four states in one day. A different meal in each state. So many beautiful sights. Rain or shine, such beautiful places to visit.

Off to Boston!

Posted on

Jen must really love me if she was willing to bring us to the airport at 4:45am this morning! It was a very early start to a rather long day. However after a short layover in Baltimore we made it to Boston.

Our first stop after getting our rental car was for lunch and where else but Wahlburgers? I of course was a fan of NKOTB when I was about eleven, and even took our oldest daughter to see them a few years ago while on tour. But Matt and I have since enjoyed their reality show and thought it would be fun. We shared the “Donnie’ s favorite”.

Afterwards we checked out the amazon book store that was across the parking lot. Then we drove about 15 minutes away north of Boston to the little suburb town of Woburn to our hotel on Unicorn Park Drive. After quickly settling into our home for the week we decided to get out and explore this little town a bit. But first, coffee please, after all we started our day before 4am. Relying on GPS we ended up a mile away at a Starbucks in the adorable little town of Winchester. As we walked up to the starbucks which was also next door to a Dunkin Donuts (seriously no shortage of DD up north) I spotted a little coffee shop across the street “The Fuller Cup”. That’s where we headed. Any coffee shop that can survive next to two huge chain competitors has our business in a heartbeat. Such a quaint little coffee house with delicious sugar free iced lattes, we’ve found our coffee shop for the next week! After getting to know the staff for a bit, we took our coffee and left the car behind and started walking around.

I fell in love with this town. We stumbled upon another little book store and grabbed our girls some goodies. Dropped in at a locally owned little pizza shop and ordered a small pizza to bring back to our room. Seriously, I’ve always been given the impression that northerners are sort of rude, I’d have to say I disagree. So far everyone we’ve come in contact with has been friendly. Back to our room for a quiet evening before we wake up early and get on the road!

Irish Italian Islenos parade 2017

Posted on

Our favorite parade, the Irish Italian Islenos! 50 floats, 30 marching groups, the cast of “Night Watch” (the TV show about New Orleans first responders) as the grand Marshalls’ of the parade, and 400,000 pounds of produce to be thrown this year!

It was a beautiful day. A bit warm, but at least it didn’t start off with rain like last year. We enjoyed a day of fun and laughter with family and friends. Matt’s coworker even joined us this year with his family. Dad insisted on coming with us, even after having a knee surgery earlier this week. So I put him under the canopy in the breezy shade in a comfy chair out of the aim of float throws. The girls had so much fun with their friends as did I with two of my favorites that I’ve known forever.

Things got scary midway through the parade though. I noticed my dad was in a lot of pain and a bit disoriented. Unfortunately, our car was trapped on the parade route and even one of his friends that I called couldn’t get through it to get him home. I went over to the car to start prepping it so that we could leave as soon as possible. I looked back across the street at him to a sight that terrified me. I could tell from the way he was slumped back in the chair something was very wrong. I ran over to him and checked his pulse. Then started screaming for someone to call 911. He had a pulse, but was completely unresponsive and laying limp in the chair. I sent someone to get me his insulin bag as the fire department arrived literally in a matter of seconds from the call being made. They weren’t able to check his blood sugar and said EMS would when they got to him. I knew it didn’t need to wait, so I checked his sugar myself and just as I knew it would be it was very high. This is when I realized how thankful I am that I had come down when he found out he has diabetes six years ago and learned everything I could about it with him. This is why I knew the signs. This is how I was able to check his sugar and give him the proper amount of insulin before EMS was even able to make it to us through a parade. By the time they arrived he was sitting up and almost back to himself. The daiquiri he drank was not a good match for his diabetes. It scared us all and I know now he will be reevaluating his decisions. Typically if he gets a daiquiri he sips it, but on such a warm day he drank it faster than he usually would. He felt awful that his grandchildren saw him in this state. It broke his heart knowing how much it scared me. At the end of the day I’m just thankful I was there with him and knew what to do to help my dad. I’m also thankful that my best friend stayed by my side through the entire ordeal while our kids daddies tried to keep them distracted. And for how quickly the first responders got to us.

The girls enjoyed the end of the parade while their Paw-Paw continued to start feeling more like himself until we were able to put him in the car to leave. I don’t think he would have gone to the parade if we weren’t in town. But I do beleive everything happens for a reason and we were meant to be with him this weekend.

Third trip to NOLA…

Posted on

Matt and I surprised the girls with a weekend trip to New Orleans for our favorite parade. Today we took it easy after driving over night. Had crawfish for lunch. Got the girls their snowballs. And took a leisurely drive through the French Quarter and even got to see my B-Boo and her sweet friend, Tina. We are more than ready for tomorrow!

Is this really our third trip to New Orleans since Mardi Gras?

Last day in town

Posted on

Met my sister, Godson, and nephew at the park for a little play time before we headed to the Parish for a few hours on our last day in town. We went to the cemetery. Mom hasn’t been able to go in years now. Then we met Laurie, Michala, and Paw-Paw at Rocky’s, because really you can never have too much Rocky’s in your life. Okay, yes you can, which is why I’m glad I live six hundred miles away from daily or weekly trips there. Then we headed to our new Parish fave, the Coffee Haus in Arabi, for a sugar free french vanilla iced cafe au lait before heading to feed the ducks (and geese) at Park Cheniere. It was a fun filled few hours in Da Parish that we wrapped up with snowballs at the pink snowball stand in Violet on Judge Perez, always a fave. Before we said our goodbyes (for now) to Laurie & Michala we headed to Marietta St for pictures her Momma requested we take with our little ladies. Momma Denise says some of her favorite memories on Marietta are of Laurie & I walking up and down that street barefoot and wanted pictures of us with the girls doing the same. We didn’t ditch the shoes, because we needed to get back across the lake soon, but I’m really glad we took the time to make those special memories with our girls that we’ve shared together for over two decades now. Marietta St may have changed a lot since the storm, but it will forever be home to us.

After picture and hugs we headed back across the lake to finish up packing. Have I said how much I miss my husband and my little Najah?

My cousin Ginny and her two babies came over to visit for a bit. Which was long over due. I can hardly get over how much she looks like her daddy these days!

Sandy, Chris, and my two favorite down da road kiddos came over for a few hours too. This was a strange week for us. Typically Sandy & I are glued at the hip when I’m in town. But a new full time job changed our routine up a bit. I’m glad we had this evening together and can’t wait for some summer fun together.

This was an interesting week to say the least. I finally got my mom out of town for the first time in years since she was put on oxygen. We had a three generations trip that has been loaded with great memories. I did however have a difficult time being away from Matt. More difficult than either of us realized. I’m not ashamed to say I shed tears more than once or that we slept on hangouts together just to feel closer to each other. I’m thankful we still share a love that strong a decade later and don’t think it will be easy to pry me away from him for some time. Also, I got to spend time with my two best friends at the same time! Got to spend time with one of my oldest friends, family, parading, and exploring. It was an absolutely beautiful week, but I’m ready to get back to Texas to the man that holds my heart tighter than he will ever know! Or well, maybe now he does know;)

Jackson Square on Wednesday

Posted on

Spent the day in the Quarter with Aub, Mad, Bitty, Maw-Maw, Emma, Laurie, & Michala. We dropped Maw-Maw and the girls off at Jackson Square so they could play in the park while we parked and grabbed lunch from Verdi Marte on Royal for a little picnic, people watching, & listened to some live street music. Then we did some exploring down Decatur to the French Market.I finally found my New Orleans cross for our cross wall and even found two small day of the dead crosses too. We even scored daddy some alligator jerky.

We got to keep Emma with us for another night! Paw-Paw came over when we got back to the house and took the girls for an ice cream. Gigi left for her trip this morning and we miss her already! Everyone was in their pjs early and tomorrow will hopefully be a pretty low key kinda day before we spend our last full day here Friday with family and friends. Can hardly wait to hug Matt and cuddle with my little old man, Najah!

A dozen alligators

Posted on

Fun filled day in Da Parish! Picked up Laurie & Michala and headed to Rocky’s for lunch before taking the girls to the battlefield and down to the end of the world. We spotted a dozen alligators and a whole lot of pelicans. Picked Emma up for a slumber party. Then got the girls another snowball before heading back across the lake. Tonight the girls had fun making slime and being silly. Love seeing the girls having so much fun! Only wish my husband was here to see it all. Missing him tons.
